The Ministry of Education continues to remain silent about the sacking of five school teachers from a secondary school in Gau this month.

In a statement shared by the teachers themselves, they said that the Ministry of Education dishonorably discharged or terminated their contract after a disciplining incident that happened at the school.

The teachers claimed that the indiscipline in the school has doubled up to an all-time high with cases including marijuana seeds found on a student, boys entering and sleeping in the girls' hostel on several nights, students openly swearing at teachers or yelling out for teachers to go back to their villages, two male teachers were on the brink of being assaulted by hostel boys, COVID positive boys breaking off from the quarantine room and sneaking up to the girls' hostel, swear words written on toilet walls aimed at teachers, a bucket of home brew found in the hostel and students openly smoking suki during normal school hours in the school compound.

The teachers also claimed that the students were disciplined with 3 strokes before a parent reported the incident which led them to court.

They said that based on the severity of the students' behaviour, the judge dismissed the case.

fijivillage had sought answers and clarification from the Permanent Secretary for Education, Dr Anjeela Jokhan however she says that she cannot comment on this issue.
