Minister for Health, Dr Atonio Lalabalavu

Evidence shows that when midwives are supported, they can deliver 90% of the sexual, reproductive, maternal, adolescent, and health needs of the population.

The Minister for Health, Dr Atonio Lalabalavu highlighted this during the celebration of the International Day of the Midwives with the theme of together again from evidence to reality.

Dr Lalabalavu further says that it's a declaration that all people agree with is that Midwives save Lives.

He says in Fiji, midwives have been living with the theme of coming together and delivering expert, quality maternal and newborn health services when our families needed them the most.

He adds that if we want to ensure midwives have the resources and support to continuously provide the critical services they are known for, people need to leverage moments of celebration like this.

The Minister for Health says as citizens, donors, and community leaders, we must explore opportunities to invest in our midwives as a way of accelerating progress towards achieving universal sexual and reproductive health and rights and laying the foundation for a better world.

Dr Lalabalavu also acknowledges the coming together of the global midwife community to act on evidence and knowledge that will deliver meaningful change for the profession and the women and families they care for.
