Mesley reveals the possibility of Fiji hosting a 'Bula Round' as discussions are underway

Super Rugby Pacific Chief Executive Jack Mesley has revealed that there is a possibility of a Super Round to be held in Fiji which could be dubbed the “Bula Round”.

Mesley says the Super Rugby Pacific Administrators are keen to bring back the Super Round that was held in Melbourne, and discussions are underway for the event to possibly be moved to Fiji.

A Super Round is when all teams play that particular round hosted by one franchise and its home ground.

When asked how good it would be to bring the Super Round concept back and have a Bula Round, he says he certainly hopes that it could happen and it would be awesome.

He says they are investigating it and they are having several discussions with different territories about that, and Fiji is certainly one of them.

Mesley says he feels it would be a great road trip for rugby fans to go out there and see a weekend of Super Rugby and get a great cultural experience and tie it on to a couple of days on the islands or in Nadi and have a holiday.

He says logistically, there would have to be a lot going into it.

The CEO says the discussions they are having are also about the infrastructure that would be needed to enable the Bula Round to happen.

Mesley says things like lights in Nadi’s Prince Charles’ Park and Lautoka’s Churchill Park to enable night games.

He says if a venue is hosting 5 Super Rugby Pacific games in a weekend, there is a need for night games to happen, also air-conditioned changing rooms are needed to enable double-headers, and it is those types of things they would definitely need.

Mesley adds they are investigating all those things because he feels the Drua is an integral part of the Super Rugby Pacific competition, a real point of difference to other competitions, and to get as many people out there to see what it's like would be excellent.

The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua will take on the Western Force at 6.05pm Sunday in Perth.

In other matches this week, Moana Pasifika will take on the Chiefs at 6.05pm Friday, the Highlanders will play the Reds at 3.35pm Saturday, the Blues will host the Crusaders at 6.05pm Saturday and the Waratahs will play the Brumbies at 8.35pm Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Rooster Chicken Fijian Drua Women will take on the Western Force at 8.50pm Sunday at HBF Park in Perth.
