The Country Director of Medical Services Pacific says there is a lot of anxiety and uncertainty in Fiji right now for many families as they had clients who were on the verge of selling their homes, cars and other assets because they wanted to have some buffer funds for them to see this pandemic through.

Ashna Shaleen says they are also seeing clients with grief and loss issues who are needing support where somebody has passed away due to COVID-19.

Shaleen also reveals they are getting feedback that families are finding difficulties in providing food for their households as most family members are at home including children who are eating at several intervals.

She says more children are also calling their help lines and asking when school will resume as they are getting bored at home.

Shaleen says their counselors then speak to the parents on how they are keeping the children engaged at home and also help them with their plans.

She says they are happy to note that there is an effort from the Ministry of Education in getting zoom classes and virtual learning for students however they are receiving feedback that students are facing challenges like not having access to smartphones or other devices.

Schools are providing those students with worksheets and other necessary assistance who do not have access to online learning.

Medical Services Pacific is currently working with the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation and the Fiji Police Force and is providing a whole range of health and social services.

If you need help, you can reach out on the MSP helplines: 5640 (adults) and 1325 (children).
