Litia Marama Matia has been recognized for her exceptional commitment to recycling advocacy during during the Global Recycling Day celebrations and has been presented the Advocates Influencing Mindsets and Mentoring Agents Award at Churchill Park, Lautoka.

The award was handed over by Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica.

Matia, the Learning Development Specialist at the Housing Authority of Fiji was part of the recycle program implemented at the Housing Authority in partnership with USAID CCBO.

The Pacific Recycling Foundation says she actively participated in comprehensive recycling they training.

PRF says inspired by the training, Matia took her advocacy beyond her workplace and extended it to the tikina of Nakorotubu in the Province of Ra, where she engaged local women in five coastal villages.

They say through Litia’s efforts, these women are now actively collecting, cleaning, sorting and storing recyclables, contributing to sustainable waste management in their communities.

They say she further facilitated the transportation of these recyclables to Valelevu, where they are responsibly disposed of at the I Recycle Hub.

PRF founder Amitesh Deo says Matia’s work is a remarkable example of how one person’s advocacy can lead to tangible change.

Deo says her passion and dedication have not only transformed recycling practices within the Housing Authority but have also empowered women in remote villages to take ownership of sustainable waste management.

He says her efforts embody the essence of what the AMMA Award represents - inspiring action in the recycling movement.

Deo stresses it celebrates those who influence positive behavioral change and mentor others in best recycling practices, furthering PRF’s mission of fostering sustainable waste management solutions.

He says they encourage more individuals and organizations to participate in recycling efforts actively.
