The Mataqali Nabukebuke in Namosi Village have taken the initiative to launch a sustainability project by reducing carbon emissions in their village.

While speaking during the signing of the contract between Mataqali Nabukebuke Holdings Company Limited and Aboriginal Carbon Foundation of Australia, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad said such an initiative contributed to the fact of commitment and working together amongst the community for economic excellence and also to protect the sustainability of the flora and fauna of their surrounding.

Prof. Prasad says the threats posed by Climate Change to small island nations such as Fiji are not to be taken lightly, especially for the beautiful scenery like Namosi.

He says this event signifies the signing of a groundbreaking contract, symbolizing a community-led climate response initiative that transcends mere rhetoric and places action at the forefront.

The Deputy Prime Minister says communities and geographical areas are severely affected by climate change whereas in some parts of the country, they are already experiencing the consequences of rising sea levels, saltwater intrusion, and extreme weather events.

He further says these factors can significantly impact the social and economic well-being of communities, causing disruption and damage.

He adds the contract signed by Mataqali Nabukebuke Holdings aligns with the government's goals to reduce carbon emissions from the forestry sector.
