60 members of the Mataisuva Youth Group in Veikoba Settlement in Valelevu are using crops and vegetables from their farms to assist families struggling within their community due to the financial impact of the current COVID-19 outbreak.

Mataisuva Youth President Tevita Bureselei says their assistance is in two phases.

In the first phase, they assisted elders and single-parents while in the second phase they helped those struggling because of unemployment.

He says they have assisted 30 elderly people, 13 single parents and 75 families struggling because of unemployment.

Bureselei says the assistance includes crops and vegetables from their farms and with the support from overseas members and others they have been able to provide rice, sugar, flour and other non-perishable items.

He adds some people that receive the assistance think that it is from the government but when they hear that it is from their own community youth, they feel proud because they know most of them are not employed and are farmers.

Bureselei says he is thankful to his members for giving their time and effort to this program.

He is hopeful other youth groups take the lead in assisting their community during these tough times.
