Hundreds of market vendors will benefit from more than 10,000 Personal Protective Equipment such as disinfectants, hand gloves, masks and hand sanitizers donated by UN Women.

Minister for Local Government, Premila Kumar says UN Women have been their close partners and have again stepped in to assist the municipal markets by providing about 8,000 face masks, 2,000 antibacterial soaps and 200 hand sanitisers.

They have also donated bleach, hand gloves, garbage bags and masking tapes.

The first batch of supplies have already been distributed to the Suva City Council, Lautoka City Council, Lami Town Council, Nasinu Town Council, Nausori Town Council, Nadi Town Council and Ba Town Council.

Kumar says the municipal councils have developed appropriate policies to make markets COVID safe and the supplies will assist in realizing these policies in the markets.

She says the workers and market vendors are monitored on a daily basis as they continue the fight against the deadly virus.

The Minister adds markets are absolutely essential for food security and remains open around Viti Levu, therefore they must continue raising awareness to ensure market vendors and the public are aware of the impacts of not adhering to the COVID Safe protocols.
