A man who allegedly stabbed his de-facto wife that resulted in her death has been remanded in custody by the Suva Magistrates Court.

44-year-old Sivaniolo Vunakece is charged with one count of murder.

The incident happened on Sunday in their home at Nanuku Settlement, Vatuwaqa.

Police say the man allegedly stabbed the woman, causing her serious injuries which resulted in her death.

The Police prosecutor told the court that they are objecting to bail as this is an indictable offence and there is a possibility that the accused would interfere with the witnesses.

When asked by Magistrate Waleen George why he should be granted bail, Vunakece said he has no intention of interfering with the witnesses and if granted bail, he will reside in Lami with his sister.

The court was informed that Vunakece is also charged with acting to cause grievous harm where a Domestic Violence Restraining Order was issued.

The alleged victim was also his 21-year-old de-facto wife.

Magistrate George said that Vunakece was granted bail and was issued an interim Domestic Violence Restraining Order.

She said his bail condition included non-contact with the alleged victim where he had to be 100 metres from her.

She said he allegedly breached the conditions.

When asked by Magistrate George if he knows what a DVRO is, Vunakece told the court that he was staying away from the victim but she still came.

Magistrate George said Vunakece has been denied bail on the grounds that this is an indictable offence, he is likely to interfere with the witnesses and for allegedly breaching bail conditions.

The matter will be called in the Suva High Court on the 10th of November.
