33-year-old Jekope Naimawi.

High Court Judge Justice Salesi Temo has found 33-year-old Jekope Naimawi guilty of murdering his partner, Maraia Tala on the 10th of January last year.

Naimawi assaulted his 35-year-old partner with a biscuit tin which contained home-brew.

He then poured premix over her and set her on fire while she was unconscious.

The woman was hospitalised with serious injuries and passed away two weeks later.

While delivering his judgement, Justice Temo said he relied on the 15-year-old eyewitness who woke up on the morning of 10th January to find Naimawi, his partner and their friends drinking home brew.

He said the girl also saw Naimawi and Tala fighting, saw him pour a bucket of home-brew on her and also saw Tala fleeing to seek refuge in her house where she hid Tala under her bed.

She also saw Naimawi carry Tala back to his house and while peeping through the window, saw him pour benzene on Tala and set her on fire.

Justice Temo also relied on Naimawi's admission to the officer who had charged him and to the doctor who had examined him after he was charged.

The prosecution has recommended a maximum prison term of 20 years while the defence lawyer has told the court to consider the fact that Naimawi is a first offender and has a 3-year-old daughter.

Naimawi will be sentenced tomorrow.
