19 people charged with 22 counts of non-sexual violence offences last month

A 31-year-old man was charged with the murder of his 28-year-old de facto partner in October where he allegedly assaulted and strangled the victim which resulted in her death.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions says there were 19 people charged with a total of 22 counts of non-sexual violence offences last month.

There were two counts of murder, a count of attempted murder, 4 aggravated robbery, 3 aggravated burglary, 1 burglary, 4 theft, 1 arson, 1 attempt to commit arson, 1 reckless or negligent act, 1 act with intent to cause grievous harm, 1 careless driving, and 2 breach of bail charges.

There were 15 victims and 19 accused persons which included a juvenile and a police officer.

There were two incidents where the accused and the victim were related to one another.

A 36-year-old man was charged with the attempted murder of his 39-year-old brother.

There was one incident where a 41-year-old man and a 25-year-old man were charged with the murder of a 29-year-old man, however, this matter was discontinued due to insufficient evidence.

A 26-year-old police officer was charged with one count of careless driving.

In other cases, cash and assorted items were stolen during the alleged aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary offences which consisted of house and shop break-ins, garage break-ins, and day and night street muggings.

There was one incident where a 17-year-old boy was charged with burglary, theft and breach of bail.

A 33-year-old man was charged with arson where he allegedly set fire to the commercial plantation of Fiji Pine Ltd containing 58,794 pine trees.

In another incident, a 29-year-old man was charged with the attempt to commit arson where he allegedly set fire to a suitcase under a 69-year-old woman’s house while knowing that the house can likely catch fire.

A 22-year-old man was charged with the reckless or negligent act where it is alleged that the man in a reckless manner, omitted to take precautions against any probable danger and lit fire in front of a kava shop.

Five cases were withdrawn after discontinuances were filed due to insufficient evidence.
