Concerns about poor road conditions on Koro and Gau islands, which have significantly affected farmers and the local economy are set to be addressed with road works expected to begin soon.

Minister for Public Works and Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau confirmed that tenders have been approved and work is expected to start immediately.

Ro Filipe was responding to questions from fijivillage News after a driver from a shipping services company raised concerns on his Facebook page.

The driver highlighted that the deteriorating roads from Nawaikama to Nukuloa in Gau have led to school trips being cancelled, leaving students stranded and missing out on valuable classroom time.

He says farmers on both islands are also struggling as transporting produce has become increasingly difficult, threatening their livelihoods and the island’s agricultural output.

Villagers on both islands have called on the Minister to prioritize durable roads that can withstand harsh weather, connect communities and ensure students can safely attend school while supporting the vital farming industry.

Meanwhile, the Fiji Roads Authority says they have noted the concerns and are working to address the issues.

They added that road works will commence once a barge is available.
