Assistant Minister for Employment, Alvick Maharaj says SODELPA MP, Inosi Kuridrani should stop asking Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum to step down for political gain as he has not been charged with an offence.

This is after Kuridrani called on Sayed-Khaiyum to resign yesterday due to the allegations against him in relation to a bombing incident in 1987.

Maharaj says before calling the Attorney General a terrorist, Kuridrani should first question the credibility of such allegation because a woman decided to lodge a complaint against him after some 33 years after the alleged incident.

He says she did this only after she was recently charged by FICAC.

Maharaj says despite the uncertain allegation, Kuridrani has joined the rank of FLP Leader, Mahendra Chaudhry and Unity Fiji Leader, Savenaca Narube calling for Sayed-Khaiyum to step down.

He says Sayed-Khaiyum has just given a statement to the Police.

He says when talking about charges, 7 MPs were charged with a lot of evidence by FICAC.

Maharaj questioned Kuridrani why there is double standards for the six SODELPA MPs charged as FijiFirst MP, Vijendra Prakash has done the honorable thing and resigned.

SODELPA MP, Ro Filipe Tuisawau rose with a point of order and said that the case is before the court and it should not be discussed in parliament.

However, Speaker of Parliament, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau ruled that the issue that is being discussed is part of the President’s address and Maharaj is just replying to what Kuridrani had said yesterday.

Maharaj says some media are trying to have a trial by media including the politicians but whenever he has been questioned by them, Sayed-Khaiyum has said “no comment and follow the due process”.

He has thanked the Attorney General for adhering to the rule of law, maintaining his honour and dealing with the matters with dignity.

Maharaj has also thanked Vijendra Prakash for putting parliament first and following the values of FijiFirst and resigning.
