The victorious Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School girls' team have been recognised for their achievement at the Coca-Cola girls’ division where the school held a special function in their honour and gave them cash prizes, trophies and certificates.

The team won 13 gold, 8 silver and 7 bronze medals.

Gold medalists received $100, silver medalists got $75 while bronze medalist got $50.

Team captain, Torika Radovu says they started their training 10 months ago with the Royal’s Athletics Club.

She says they came into camp two weeks before the Coke’s final where the seniors in the team re-established the winning culture and included small things such as how their hair needs to be tied, wearing of skirts during devotion when to eat, respecting their supporters, humility and care.

Radovu says the team was feeling down on the second day of the competitions as they had not won many medals but after an inspiring message from Master Rasoki that left them in tears, they all assured the team that they would win gold.

She also thanked the Gujarati Association, the school management and caterers.

Team Manager, Luvu Karikaritu says 15 students had to leave the comfort of their homes, families, friends and communities and be at MGM which was already in off-season training.

She says these athletes from the coastal areas of Macuata, Seaqaqa, Natewa Bay in Cakaudrove, Taveuni, Bua and Naitasari converged at MGM to pursue their dreams in academics and sports.

Karikaritu has assured the students that the school will ensure that they fulfil their dreams and aspirations.

Parent, Matadigo Koroi says he is encouraging everyone and that there is a little girl right now who is dreaming of going to MGM.

Meanwhile, Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro says the team has surpassed all expectations and proven themselves as a force to be reckoned with.

Radrodro says each member of the squad has demonstrated skill, dedication and a fighting spirit that has brought them triumph.

He says from the very beginning, this victory was not handed to the team on a silver platter, as they have embarked on a five-year journey as a family from the stakeholders of the school, parents, guardians and especially the athletes.

Radrodro commended the athletes who have faced countless challenges both on and off the field and track, which tested their determination.

The Minister says through unwavering commitment, the athletes have persevered through it all, training tirelessly to push their limits and never settling for anything less than excellence.
