Permanent Secretary for Waterways and Environment, Joshua Wycliff

Permanent Secretary for Waterways and Environment, Joshua Wycliffe says according to initial analysis the dead fish and shrimps that were found in a drain along Jerusalem Road in Nabua earlier this month may have been due to low water quality.

The samples collected from the incident were sent to the University of the South Pacific’s Institute of Applied Sciences Laboratory.

Wycliffe says there was low dissolved oxygen levels in the water and although it is inconclusive at this stage, it may have caused the death of the fish and shrimps.

He says the next stage of the investigation is to check the possible water sources and they have spoken to a few individuals to find out what could have happened.

Wycliffe says they are trying to find any leaks.

He says if they find out that someone was responsible then they will have to take action according to the law.

Wycliffe also says it is unclear if the water would have posed a risk to human health because the bigger fish in the drain remained unharmed.

However he says they are not ruling anything out.
