As Fiji’s Local Government Elections approach, Minister for Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, is working closely with the Electoral Commission to ensure a smooth and transparent process.

This collaboration is vital for the people of Fiji, as it ensures that the upcoming elections are in line with the Local Government Act 1972 and meet the needs of communities across the country.

Nalumisa expressed gratitude for the continued support from the Electoral Commission and the Fijian Elections Office, acknowledging their role in helping the Ministry meet all legal requirements.

He says the focus of the recent meeting Commission was to discuss the number of councillors to be allocated to different wards in the 13 municipalities to ensure that every community is fairly represented.

He further says a key part of the preparation process involves consulting with residents, ratepayers, political parties, youth groups and other stakeholders.

Nalumisa says these discussions will help ensure that the voices of the people are heard and that any changes to the structure of municipal councils, including the number of councillors, reflect the needs of each community.

He says these consultations are crucial for a fair and transparent election process, ensuring that policies are shaped by the concerns of those who will be directly impacted.

He adds that the Ministry remains committed to delivering the Local Government Elections as promised to the people of Fiji, with an emphasis on openness and inclusivity.
