Loata Bau Lewageena of Ratu Sukuna Memorial School

Loata Bau Lewageena of Ratu Sukuna Memorial School has broken the Coca-Cola Games intermediate discus record in the Suva Zone 1 meet with a throw of 42.55 metres.

The previous record was set last year by Brieanna Rabakewa from Swami Vivekananda College in Nadi, with a throw of 42.54 metres.

Speaking to fijivillage Sports, Lewageena says she wanted to make a name for herself this year by breaking last year’s record, which has now become a reality.

Vasiti Taka also from RSMS was placed second, while Eunice Ravudolo from CMF College took home the bronze.

Meanwhile, Peter Burese of Sacred Heart College broke the Senior Boys' high jump zone record with a stunning leap of 1.95 metres.

Burese's jump did not only earn him a gold medal but also surpassed the long-standing record of 1.85 metres set by Jonathan Appleby of International School Suva in 1996.

His dedication to the sport has been relentless, balancing his high jump training with his passion for volleyball.

He credits his parents for their unwavering support, which has contributed to his dominance in the event.

The Sacred Heart College student is determined to push his limits even further and believes that with continued hard work and discipline, he can improve on his record-breaking jump and make an even greater impact on the national stage.

Salanieta Vereivalu of Ratu Sukuna Memorial School broke the Junior Girls’ javelin with a throw of 40.18 metres, smashing the previous record of 30.44 metres set in 2010 by Suzie Alowesi of MGM.

In other results, in the 1,500-metres final for the sub-junior girls’ category, MGM’s Meretelagi Ratubaka secured gold, Erini Marama Beteurata from John Wesley College claimed the silver, and Mereani Vakaliwaliwa from Nasinu Secondary took the bronze.

For the 1,500-metres boys’ category, Viliame Nakaisake won gold, Kitione Romala from MGM got silver, and Fred Tuivanuaso from Jeremiah College took bronze.

After Day 1 of competition, Ratu Sukuna Memorial School is leading the boys medal tally with 3 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze.

Sacred Heart College is in second place with 3 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze, while John Wesley College is third with 3 gold.

In the girls division, MGM leads with 5 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze.

Ratu Sukuna Memorial School is in second place with 5 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze, while CMF College is in third place with 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze.

The competition will continue tomorrow at the HFC Bank Stadium.
