Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Rosy Akbar says there are many families who may not be celebrating Diwali this year; therefore, she asks that we celebrate the festival in the true sense and spirit by spreading joy, sharing and lighting up the spirits for others.

Akbar says let's extend a hand to help the needy and enjoy the festival with responsibility towards the vulnerable members of our communities.

The Minister says may the lamps of Diwali brighten all our lives and colours of Rangoli add more hues to our life.

Akbar says Fiji is known for its diversity and Diwali has always been made extra special with the coming together of people of different backgrounds, cultures and races to celebrate and enjoy the festivity.

She says we will continue to share the message of Diwali and celebrate the triumph of good over evil.

Akbar says this message never gets old and no matter how many generations we pass, nothing will be able to replace the importance of righteousness.

She says her ministry looks after the needs of the five most vulnerable segments of the Fijian population; women, children, people with disabilities, older persons and the poor.

Akbar says undoubtedly, in their everyday work they use the principles that come out strongly in the story of Diwali as they promote love and respect for the people when they advocate on rights of women and children and call on their safety and a violence/abuse free life.

She also says they promote family unity to safeguard the disadvantaged members of the families, they encourage communities to work in solidarity to address social ills, and assist those individuals and families that need that extra support for survival.

Akbar says she is proud to say, her ministry encompasses the spirit of Diwali each day, and more importantly, this is the very agenda of the Fijian Government.

She says may the spirit of oneness and multiculturalism that has always been the reason for every celebration be renewed this Diwali and continue to thrive within our homes and hearts.

Akbar says as a nation we have overcome many challenges with our ability to work together as one people and it's indeed reason to celebrate during such festive occasion, and why not together.
