Our nation faces pressing issues that demand immediate attention. These include police violence, gender-based violence, child abuse, poverty, discrimination and exploitation within the workforce including the plight of the migrant workers, and the far-reaching impacts of climate change.

Those are the words of the Chair of the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission, Pravesh Sharma as we celebrate Human Rights Day today, reflecting on this year’s theme, “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now.”

Sharma says the theme is a powerful call to action, reminding us that addressing critical challenges to human rights cannot wait.

He says the decisions we make and the actions we take today will define the future of human rights in Fiji and beyond.

Sharma says vulnerable groups, including women, children, persons with disabilities, LGBTI persons and marginalized communities, often bear the brunt of these challenges.

He stresses that the time to act is now—delaying solutions only deepens inequalities and threatens the dignity and well-being of the people.

The Commission emphasises that human rights are obligations that require urgent, concrete action.

The Commission says as we work to uphold the principles enshrined in Fiji’s Constitution and international human rights frameworks, we must recognize the interconnected nature of these challenges.

He says poverty, for instance, is not just a lack of resources; it is a denial of basic rights.

Sharma adds climate change is not just an environmental issue; it is a human rights crisis threatening the livelihoods, homes, and future of many Fijians, and public health care without enough beds leaves the sick waiting to receive treatment.

He says this Human Rights Day, they call on policymakers, civil society, and all Fijians to take bold and immediate steps to address these critical issues.

Sharma says let us prioritize the protection of those most at risk, and ensure that the rights to safety, equality, health, education, and livelihoods are upheld for everyone.
