260 residents in a village in Naitasiri have better lights after the installation of 45 solar street lights improving safety and supporting early morning activities by the villagers.

The project was completed by the USAID-funded Peace Corps Small Project Assistance Program and led by the village women’s group.

Vatiseva Drulala, leader of the women’s group, highlighted the need for the project and said they got the solar lights because there was not enough light at night along the walkways and roads in their community.

Drulala says the lights have made it easier to walk around at night.

Strategic Communications and Grants Coordinator Ruben Pickering told fijivillage News the initiative is part of their community projects

The project not only addresses immediate safety concerns but also contributes to the community’s preparedness for natural disasters.

They can now prepare for future weather forecasts like hurricanes that cause power outages.

Peace Corps Volunteer, Rujeko, who supported the initiative, expressed pride in the community’s accomplishment and looks forward to the project’s long-term impact.

Rujeko says this achievement showcases the power of community-driven initiatives in fostering resilience and improving the quality of life.
