Leaders of the Pacific Islands and all those who have been saying they support Japan's decision to dump the Fukushima wastewater into the Pacific Ocean need to be careful because they are putting the lives of all Pacific people on the line.

These were the words of DIVA for Equality Founder and co-organiser of the protest march and people’s rally against the Fukushima nuclear wastewater dumping, Noelene Nabulivou during the protest march this morning.

Nabulivou says from our past experiences with nuclear testing in the Pacific when you say it is safe, you don't know what the effects are going to be 100 years from now, and it's all of our children and our generations to come who will be paying the price.

She says the march today is to make sure the people's voices are really loud and clear that they want to take the strongest position and that they are against the plan for the Fukushima nuclear wastewater to be dumped in the Pacific.

She adds the Pacific Ocean covers a quarter of the world's surface, the currents are really strong and take everything everywhere around the Pacific and there are 41 countries that border the Pacific Ocean, so they want to be clear that they expect everyone to take the strongest position to make sure that we stay healthy for the generations to come as well as ourselves.

Nabulivou says there are alternatives where the wastewater can be used for building sea walls and other materials in Japan.

Nabulivou adds that if this wastewater is safe, then why don't they just use it there in Japan or find other ways to get rid of it.

She says we really don't want it in our ocean as it affects our food security and sovereignty as well as the ecological balance.

Nabulivou adds we are already losing 200 species a day right now around the world to climate change, and that's also not of our making as the Pacific people haven't done this.
