The Land Transport Authority has received information about taxi operators using mobile phone apps that work like taxi meters.

Based on this, LTA is urging all taxi permit holders and drivers to activate their taxi meters when providing services to the public as that is the only device sanctioned by the government through the LTA to determine the fees per distance.

LTA Acting Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa says all taxis are fitted with taxi meters that were calibrated and tested when the vehicle came in for renewal for registration.

He reiterates that any other device used by taxi operators is illegal and the Authority will investigate and take appropriate action to face the full brunt of the law once complaints are received or the information comes to their attention.

Rokosawa says taxi operators must charge the fare set by the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission, which has been calibrated in the taxi meters, following Section 66C of the Land Transport Act.

The LTA is also urging all taxi owners to follow the law and avoid using illegal apps that are not approved by the Authority because there will be consequences for not adhering to permit conditions concerning the use of taxi meters.

He strongly encourages customers to report such activities to the nearest LTA office to investigate and take appropriate actions within the law.

Under Land Transport (Public Service Vehicles) Regulations 2000 (Regulation 37(1)), the holder of a taxi permit must keep the taxi meter and any connection affixed to it in good working condition and the position in the taxi approved by the certifying officer.

Regulation 37(3) states a person who interferes with the taxi meter affixed to a taxi or any part of the mechanism controlling the taxi meter to prevent its proper working or damage its seal commits an offence.
