The Land Transport Authority has reviewed and revised its processes for driver license renewal where public service vehicle and heavy goods license holders between the age of 70 and 80 years will now be required to do a driving test every two years.

Non PSV license holders between the age of 70 and 80 years will be required to go for a driving test once every five years.

Non PSV license holders above 80 years of age will now be required to do a driving test once every two years.

There are currently 2,772 license holders above the age of 70 in Fiji.

LTA’s Acting CEO Irimaia Rokosawa says they understand ageing brings in unavoidable visual and physical changes which may affect driving performance and their safety is always paramount.

Rokosawa says this can be hazardous as such conditions result in reduced strength, coordination, and flexibility. He says seniors will be required to undergo a practical driving test which will be conducted on a vehicle of the class matching the license that has been applied for as well as a medical examination by a registered medical practitioner on an annual basis.

This is to determine whether they are physically and medically fit to drive.

Senior citizens will not have to pay a fee for the driving test.
