The Land Transport Authority is proposing the implementation of mandatory drug testing for both new and renewal applications for driver licenses following the concerning number of deaths in our country caused by the carelessness of some drivers who are taking drugs.

LTA’s Acting CEO, Irimaia Rokosawa says this measure is designed to minimise accidents and injuries caused by drivers operating under the influence of prohibited substances, thereby safeguarding the well-being of all road users is paramount.

Rokosawa says the three proposals align with the functions of the LTA as outlined in Section 8 of the Land Transport Act 1998 and its subsidiary legislations, the primary objective is to enhance road safety across the country, fostering a culture of responsible driving and reducing the incidence of accidents caused by human factors.

He says that the public consultations hosted by the LTA on launching consultation is a vital proposal to enhance road safety and empower the transport industry in Fiji.

The CEO says the public consultation process is a vital step in ensuring that the proposed measures reflect the perspectives and concerns of the community and it provides an opportunity for all stakeholders, including driving instructors, PSV operators, drivers, and the general public, to contribute their insights and recommendations.

He further says these proposals are a reflection of our dedication to continual improvement and responsiveness to the evolving needs of our society.

He adds the LTA is committed to creating a safer and more inclusive transport environment for all.

Meanwhile, the Northern Division consultation was held today.

The public consultation at the Labasa Civic Centre was a crucial engagement that aimed to gather valuable insights and feedback on three proposed measures that aligned with the Authority’s commitment to road safety and creating a gender-balanced working environment in the public service vehicle(PSV) industry.

For the Western Division, it will be held tomorrow at the Lautoka Girmit Centre from 9am to 1pm.

Consultations will be held in the Central-Eastern Division on Wednesday, at the Suva Civic Centre from 9am to 1pm at the Suva Civic Centre.

The authority is encouraging individuals and organisations to participate in the public consultation process through the public forums, and written submissions.

Online submissions can be submitted via helpdesk@lta.com.fj.
