Minister for Local Government, Premila Kumar says the opposition should look around themselves before questioning where the money from the unprecedented growth is going to.

She says the opposition have been questioning where the money is going and have also said that money is being spent recklessly.

She says the government has recently constructed 8 new fire stations while Nabouwalu Fire Station is expected to open soon.

Kumar made these comments while responding to a question in parliament by SODELPA MP, Ratu Suliano Matanitobua on the current status of the Navua Fire Station.

The Minister says the Navua Fire Station was decommissioned in December last year for safety reasons and TC Yasa had also prompted the NFA to vacate the station based on the projected path of the cyclone.

She says assessments on the structure had also revealed that the building was not fit to occupy.

Kumar says the Pacific Harbour Fire Station currently provides services to the Navua district while the Navua fire truck including the firefighters and the equipment have been deployed to the Pacific Harbour and the Suva Fire Stations.

The Minister says NFA has identified a residential building at Naitonitoni Road which is a minute away from the Navua Central Business District for the purpose of setting up a temporary fire station.

Kumar says renovation on the structure will be carried out once the situation improves and supporting businesses and suppliers are back in operation.

She says for the long term, NFA has already secured a 99-year lease over a one-acre land for the construction of a new fire station and preliminary work has already begun.
