Residents in Koronivia, Nausori are calling for more police presence in the community as there have been about 7 robberies in the area while a temple property was broken into for the third time this year.

Sadhu Sarandass Mandir priest, Amar Nath Maharaj says he found out about the incident at about 1pm today and also alleges the robbers tried to set fire to the temple.

Maharaj says the robbers allegedly entered the temple kitchen after breaking a door on the side of the building.

He says a gas stove, 2 gas cylinders, a kerosene stove and electric kettle were stolen.

Maharaj says the robbers did not enter the main temple area.

Other residents say they are worried about their lives and property following the recent series of robberies and the murder of an elderly woman earlier this month.

A resident says the response time from the Nausori Police Station is too slow and lack of vehicle has been given as an excuse.

Divisional Police Commander East SSP Josua Vodo says a report on the robbery at the temple kitchen was received and investigations are ongoing.

He says further investigation is needed on allegations of arson as initial information gathered indicate that the kitchen did not have sufficient lighting and an alternative was being used, leaving behind the residue, hence the need to confirm before stating that it was an attempted arson case. SSP Vodo says the issue of police patrols was addressed during a meeting with residents 2 weeks ago where a piece of land was also offered for the construction of a police post.

He adds all issues raised during the meeting have been taken on board and they have been working with the community in addressing the concerns.
