Today, devotees celebrate Hanuman Jyanti, honoring Lord Hanuman’s unparalleled loyalty and devotion to Lord Rama, a day before Diwali.

This annual observance, highlighted in the Ramayana signifies Hanuman’s place in the hearts of believers, inspiring people with his strength and dedication.

45-year-old Kamni Kaushal from Vunisava, Waiqele in Labasa shared her ritual of lighting a Diya made with flour dough on Naraka Chaturdashi, a practice passed down from her mother since the 1990s.

She says traditionally lit in dirty areas, the diya is now placed at a clean spot as she prays for the community's well-being, urging people to embrace virtues of love and goodness.

When asked about the changes she has noticed in celebrating Hanuman Jyanti over the years, she says people don’t seem as deeply engaged or as serious about the traditions as they once were.

She says in the past, there was a stronger sense of devotion and community involvement whereas now, it feels like fewer people are fully embracing the rituals and meaning behind this day.

Kamni’s message this Hanuman Jyanti is to encourage people to follow Hanuman’s strength, loyalty and courage, reminding them to embody these values as a guide for personal growth and resilience.

She says she is preparing her home for Diwali, eagerly waiting to celebrate it with her family.

Meanwhile, Diwali will be celebrated tomorrow followed by Goverdhan on Saturday and Bhai Dooj on Sunday.
