Joint committee takes steps to address derelict vessels despite financial challenges

A joint committee led by the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji is stepping up efforts to address the issue of derelict and abandoned ships that remain in Suva Harbour, posing risks to the marine environment and navigation.

MSAF CEO Joeli Cawaki says the committee, which includes representatives from MSAF, Fiji Ports, Customs, the Fiji Navy, Water Police and the Ministry of Environment, meets weekly to strategize vessel removals.

Cawaki emphasised that the law provides the authority to remove both derelict vessels and wrecks, however, the process faces a significant hurdle due to financial constraints.

He says they do not have the money at the moment to complete the task, but the committee is engaging vessel owners to resolve the issue legally and collaboratively.

Cawaki adds that progress has been made through these discussions, with several owners agreeing to have their vessels cut up and scrapped.

The CEO says they are almost there to clear some of these vessels and despite the challenges, the committee remains committed to finding solutions to protect Fiji’s marine environment and ensure safer waterways.
