It’s wrong to release Bainimarama and Govt must explain - Nawaikula

Former SODELPA Member of Parliament, Niko Nawaikula and former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama

Former SODELPA Member of Parliament, Niko Nawaikula says in his opinion, it is wrong to release former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, and the Coalition Government must therefore explain.

Nawaikula says for a high profile and equally high risk prisoner, it is not enough to simply release him with a statement.

He says at the very least the head of the Fiji Corrections Service or Minister must face up to the nation and media to explain before releasing him.

Nawaikula says the press release simply cited Section 46(3) and added the "commitment of the FCS to uphold the principles of justice, rehabilitation, and reintegration, as stipulated by the Corrections Act."

He says Section 46(3) lists out the pre requirement including that he must be of low security classification and for medical condition.

Nawaikula says Bainimarama does not and should not have low security classification.

He says in his case he was just a Member of Parliament but consistently refused to attend even to make submission to Parliamentary Committees because he was told he was a security risk.

The former MP says compare that to Bainimarama who removed a whole government and was even rumoured to be thinking about doing so again.

He says Bainimarama is a security risk surely and should not be released.

Nawaikula says for medical condition, we all know individuals with medical conditions are looked after better in prison because they are always monitored 24 hours.

He says he is very dissapointed.

Nawaikula says Bainimarama removed, by his own admission, a whole government escaping the most serious of all charges of treason.

He says Bainimarama passed laws to give himself a hefty pay and pension and ruled despite treason for 16 years.

Nawaikula says Bainimarama caused so much misery and hurt to many individuals and family.

He says the least we should do for all that is to let him serve just only six months.

Nawaikula adds he has no personal issue against Bainimarama but justice demands he fully serve the remaining six months instead of early release.

He is asking once again for the Government to explain.
