In almost a week and having over 21,000 members, Barter for Better Facebook page admin Marlene Dutta says it is exciting to see the trade that has been taking place on the page.

Dutta says that some people are making goods in exchange for groceries and hygiene products so that they could put packs together to send to Kadavu, Lau or different parts of Fiji for people that were affected by TC Harold.

She hopes that people continue to help each other along and get through this time and emerge as more connected people who are willing to share and care and offer kindness that has eroded in our society.

Several successful trades have taken place because of the page. Members have traded a bag of moli for wantons, some fish for kai, a bag of shoes for a bundle of bele and some chillies, fresh vegetable for pet food and even two pigs for a kayak.

Dutta who is a consultant specializing in small businesses says the page is for people to get the things that they may need or want if they did not have money to spare.

She adds that she also started the page because she wanted to offer a way for people to overcome this economic situation that they are in so that they could spend the limited cash that they have for bills, rent and utilities.

Dutta adds that another reason she started the page was that people can be more conscious of the environment.
