Attorney General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says the issue of teachers receiving their full pay during the COVID period has been raised with them as well.

He made these comments after a Savusavu resident and businessman raised with Sayed-Khaiyum that teachers did not go to work for 8 months but received their full salary and they find it hard to understand how the government justifies that.

He says some members of the business community laid off some of their staff.

While responding to the man, Sayed-Khaiyum says some teachers even though they were not working were helping out with the COVID-19 response.

Sayed-Khaiyum further says some teachers were also helping with the digital registration process.

He adds two teachers in Nasinu thanked the government for not cutting their pay because they were able to help other family members.

Sayed-Khaiyum says sometimes there are people who do benefit from the system because the overall good is applicable to the higher percentage of people.

A man at the consultation also thanked Sayed-Khaiyum for paying the teachers their full salary as the teachers were preparing worksheets for the students.

Sayed-Khaiyum will deliver the revised budget at 7.30pm next Thursday.
