Former Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama, former Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and suspended Commissioner of Police Brigadier General, Sitiveni Qiliho

The questioning process of former Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama, former Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and suspended Commissioner of Police, Brigadier General, Sitiveni Qiliho has been suspended, as the investigation files will be forwarded to the Office of the DPP for legal advice.

Chief of Intelligence, Investigations and Prosecutions, Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci says the Special Taskforce continues its investigation into other reports lodged against senior political figures and former Supervisor of Elections, Mohammed Saneem.

Two complaints were earlier filed against Bainimarama, saying he had allegedly made inciteful comments in January.

A complaint was also filed against Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum for allegedly making inciteful comments in December.

A complaint of abuse of office has also been filed against Bainimarama and Sayed-Khaiyum. They were questioned by the CID earlier this week.

A further complaint has been filed by the Acting Supervisor of Elections, Ana Mataiciwa against Sayed-Khaiyum and Mohammed Saneem.

The FEO says this is in relation to allegations of bribery, receiving a corrupting benefit and abuse of office.

These relate to Saneem’s remuneration allegedly being reviewed and approved after one and a half years had lapsed in his new contract.

The FEO says the amendments to Saneem’s contract included salary increment which included back dating it to preceding one and a half years, government agreeing to pay his tax due on the back pay, payment of election readiness and post election bonus, and Saneem’s family relocation overseas and costs associated with travel and accommodation paid by the FEO for 3 months prior to elections.

The FEO says these benefits given to Saneem through remunerations and allowances were paid out to him during the campaign period of the 2022 General Election.

Police are yet to confirm when Sayed-Khaiyum and Saneem will be questioned regarding this complaint.
