President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere.

President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has today told parliament that Fiji is home to a people that want stability, prosperity and who are wiser and are more educated than ever before.

While opening the new session of parliament today, Ratu Wiliame says Fiji’s global star is rising, our modern economy sits at the cusp of recovery and the old style of politics has no place in this new Fiji.

He has told Members of the Parliament that he knows they represent different parties and may have different priorities but they must strive to serve the best interest of all Fijians.

Ratu Wiliame says as the youngest President of Fiji, he may not have the number of years of public life under his belt as some of the MPs, but he has been in leadership long enough to see the difference between genuine democracy we share today and past systems that fell short of delivery of true equality of our people.

Ratu Wiliame also says he views preservation and strengthening for our democratic society as his greatest responsibility as the President.

He says he will protect the flame of our young democracy from all who seek to extinguish it for personal or political purposes.

Ratu Wiliame adds he will use his leadership to support the highest possible functioning of the Executive to realize the objectives of the constitution.

He also paid tribute to the former President, Jioji Konrote.
