18-year-old Sham Chand of Bulileka, Labasa who was stuck under a wall for about half an hour with his father during Tropical Cyclone Yasa says he and his family are still in shock as they never thought that his father will pass away so soon and in such a tragic circumstance.

Chand is the son of the 45 year old farmer, Ramesh Chand from Labasa who passed away due to TC Yasa when a wall in house suddenly fell on his back.

An emotional Chand told Legend FM News that it was around 8pm Thursday when they were experiencing heavy rain and destructive winds and the roof of their house was blown away.

He says his father told his mother and younger brother to stay under the bed while they were in the house.

Chand says his father told him to mix grog and while he was drinking grog, the wall suddenly fell on his back and he passed away instantly.

He says his mother and brother went out to call the neighbours during the destructive winds and they managed to save him but unfortunately his father had passed away.

Chand and his family are currently staying at their relative’s house as their house was destroyed in the cyclone.

He says his father’s funeral is on Wednesday.

Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, Education Minister Rosy Akbar and Minister for Agriculture Dr. Mahendra Reddy visited the Chand family to offer their condolences and support yesterday.
