Mahmood Khan and Winston Thompson

Mahmood Khan says he has not been told about what was the decision of the USP Council meeting which was held yesterday.

Khan is the USP's Chair of Audit and Risk Committee and is a Fijian Government Representative.

Reports have emerged that Khan has been voted out as the Chair of Audit and Risk Committee but retains his place as a Fiji representative on the Council.

Khan has told fijivillage that he was part of the meeting yesterday however he was asked to leave as there was a conflict of interest as they were discussing his affairs.

He adds that anything to do with Khan and Winston Thompson from the Council meeting can be leaked by anyone but the Council does nothing.

Khan says if he or Thompson does that, they are persecuted.

Chair of the USP Council and Pro-Chancellor Winston Thompson has told Legend FM News, that our query on this latest instance of a leak from the USP about him is a case of disinformation.

He says normally, a press release is issued by the Council at the end of a meeting and yesterday's meeting will follow that practice and a release will be issued next week.

Thompson adds the position of Pro-Chancellor is filled after a Council Search Committee scrutinises applications that are invited from all Council members and the most meritorious candidate recommended to the Council.

Thompson further says he was appointed in January 2016 following such a search process for a three-year term adding that he was unanimously reappointed in January 2019 for a second three-year term.

He has highlighted that his appointment ends on 31st December 2021.

Thompson says as the USP Statutes require, a new Pro-Chancellor must be appointed from 1st January 2022.

He also says Pro-Chancellors are appointed to represent all member countries; each member country of the USP appoints its own representative(s).

We have sent questions to the USP in relation to the Council meeting yesterday and are awaiting their response.
