Home economics for both boys and girls could help reduce gender role stereotyping of household tasks and promote gender equality.

This was highlighted by the Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Mereseini Vuniwaqa while handing over Home Economics equipment to Navesau Adventist High School in Wainibuka, Tailevu.

She says most people think that Home Economics involves sewing aprons, baking and cooking, however, it covers a wide range of studies including nutrition, clothing and textiles, personal finance and wellness.

Vuniwaqa says governments, schools, teachers and students have a part to play in ensuring that schools are free of gender stereotype and discrimination.

She further added boys and girls must feel welcome in a safe and secure learning environment.

Vuniwaqa says education, learning and life skills have no gender.

The Ministry handed over four burner stoves with an oven, one blender, five sewing machines, one over locker and one fire extinguisher to the school.

Seventh Day Adventist Education Director, Kelera Suka thanked the Ministry for the timely assistance and says it can create employment for students.

She says the perception we build in children today will determine how they will treat each other as adults and therefore, gender equality will be achievable in future.
