Heavy rain warning now in force for Fiji

A heavy rain warning is now is force for Fiji.

An active trough of low pressure remains slow moving over Fiji while associated cloud and rain continues to affect the country.

A flash flood warning is now in force for low lying areas, small streams and flood prone areas adjacent to Rakiraki, Nasivi and Ba Rivers, and is also in place for areas from Sigatoka to Rakiraki while a flash flood alert remains in force for flood prone areas, small streams and low lying areas for the rest of the Western Division.

A flash flood alert is also in force for small streams and flood prone areas from Bua to Macuata.

A river flood warning remains in force for Ba, Tuva, Nadi and Vitogo Rivers while a flood alert remains in force for the rest of the major rivers in the Western Division.

Possible impacts include flooding of towns, roads, Irish crossing and bridges in low lying areas and flood plains.

Parts of the Western Division are still flooded as heavy rain continues.

Flood waters in Nadi Town and the Nadi Temple area have receded while the Pacific Energy Limited end of the Nadi Back Road remains flooded.

Nadi Town Council Acting CEO, Muni Gopal Reddy says 80 percent of the businesses in the town are closed.

The Kings Highway is open for public transport in the Rakiraki and Tavua corridor.

Crossing in Vatukacevakeva, Qeleloa, Korotale, Namonamona, Burenitu, Rakiraki, Nausori, Narara, Katudrau and Rakiraki Backroad are still under water.

In Sigatoka, the road from Kavanagasau Village towards Raiwaqa Bridge, Emuri Bridge, Nasau and Lawai Villages, Emuri Village, Nalele Road, Ulusila Bridge, Nakalavo Road, Valley Road and Savuto Crossing are flooded.

The causeway at Vunisea Jetty in Kadavu has been partially eroded, and rock armours partially dislodged.

Fiji Roads Authority says contractor will begin restoration works from today while maritime shipping is scheduled from Wednesday morning.

Parts of Western Division are flooded as heavy rain continues.

The Nadi Town, bus stand area, Nadi Back Road and temple area and the area close to Nadi Sangam College are flooded.

Main street, bus stand area and market area in Ba Town are also flooded and water level is rising.

Naqoro Flat, Qeleloa, Korotale in Rakiraki are flooded while Korotale and Raiwasa Bridges are under 4 feet of water.

Raiwasa Mead Road in Rakiraki is under 6 feet of water.

Tavua Town and Yaladro Flats in Tavua are also flooded while Tabutabu Irish Crossing, Church Road, Logalagi and Lololevu Bridges in Vatukoula are underwater and water level is rising.

Buabua Field 4, Luvu in Vitogo Paipai in Lautoka are flooded.

In Sigatoka, the main Queens Highway is open to all drivers, however, Emuri, Navutu and Lawai village crossings are underwater.

TC Kevin: Flash flood warning in force for low lying areas, small streams and flood prone areas within Rakiraki, Nasivi and Ba River

A flash flood warning is now in force for low lying areas, small streams and flood prone areas within Rakiraki, Nasivi and Ba River while a flash flood alert remains in force for flood prone areas, small streams and low lying areas for the rest of the Western Division.

A river flood warning remains in force for Ba, Tuva, Nadi and Vitogo Rivers while a flood alert remains in force for the rest of the major rivers in the Western Division.

Possible impacts include flooding of towns, roads, Irish crossings and bridges in low lying areas and flood plains.

Also expect some disruption to traffic flow and transport route.

A heavy rain warning remains in force for Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, Northern Ba and Ra, greater Nadi/Lautoka/Ba area, Sigatoka, interior of Ba and Nadroga/Navosa, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands Yasawa and Mamanuca Groups, Lau and Lomaiviti Groups.

A heavy rain alert remains in force for the rest of Fiji.

Category 4 Severe Tropical Cyclone Kevin lies to the far South of Fiji and is gradually moving Southeast however, the associated active trough of low pressure with cloud and rain continues to affect the group.

All schools will be closed today due to adverse weather.

Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro confirms that the decision has been made after consultation with the National Disaster Management Office.

Radrodro says this is due to continuous rain, possible flooding, and disruptions to public transport services.

Heavy rain and flood warnings remain in place for Fiji.

All parents and guardians are advised to keep following the weather news issued in the media.

The Ministry will continue liaising with NDMO.

Parents advised to use their discretion in sending their children to school in areas affected by adverse weather

Based on the adverse weather condition looming over the western part of Viti Levu (Nadroga to Rakiraki), Vanua Levu, Taveuni, Kadavu and nearby islands, Lau and Lomaiviti Groups, the Education Ministry advises all parents and guardians in these areas to take note of the weather condition tomorrow, and use their discretion when deciding whether or not to send their children to school.

The Ministry says this decision has been made in liaison with the National Disaster Management Office.

All parents and guardians are advised to keep following the weather news issued in the media.

The Ministry will continue liaising with NDMO should there be a need to make any further decisions.
