A Heavy Rain Warning is now in force for the Western, Central and Eastern Divisions, while a Heavy Rain Alert continues to be in force for the Northern Division.

Localised heavy falls may lead to flash flooding in low-lying and flood- prone areas with the chance of river flooding.

The National Disaster Management Office is advising the public that an active trough of low pressure with associated cloud and rain is expected to develop to the West of Fiji and gradually move East over the Fiji Group and affect most parts of the group from this afternoon till early Friday.

They say this expected trough is anticipated to produce occasional to periods of rain, heavy at times, and thunderstorms over most parts of the group from this afternoon or evening.

The NDMO says since the ground is already saturated from the rainfall events of the past few days, the chance for floods and landslides is elevated, and the NDMO urges drivers and pedestrians to be cautious of landslides - and to stay away from the slide areas and report landslide incidents to the nearest police station.

The public is urged to take the necessary measures to ensure that the lives of individuals and families are protected.

Families and communities are urged to prepare emergency kits and put into practice their family/community disaster preparedness plans.

Take the necessary steps to ensure that homes and properties are secured.

The NDMO says should the need to evacuate arise, ensure that your family is aware of your nearest evacuation centre, and ensure that all movements are made with caution.

Please remember to pack food and necessities, and that the needs of all family members are considered.

If you are unsure about your nearest evacuation centre and/or need assistance with evacuation, please call a police station near you.

They say if you are unsure about the condition of roads and crossings, contact the Fiji Roads Authority on 5720 for advice before travelling.

Mariners are also advised to heed warnings issued by the relevant authorities.
