74-year-old Puskar Charan from Sigatoka

Having just attained education till class two, it didn’t stop 74-year-old Puskar Charan from Sigatoka to earn as much as any educated person.

Almost half of his life, the 74-year-old had planted and grown cane for the survival of his family.

He was then introduced to commercial guava farming by the Taiwan Technical Mission in Fiji.

Charan says he was shown how to plant guavas and how to harvest.

He says without the help of the Taiwan Technical Mission in Fiji, he wouldn’t have been able to achieve what he has today.

He says back in his days, school was two kilometres away and transportation was a major issue.

But with guava farming, he has been able to get his three children proper education and he has been able to travel overseas and provide for his family.

He has over a thousand guava plants on his farm in the Salad Bowl of Fiji which is in the Sigatoka Valley.

The 74-year-old says despite the impacts of COVID-19 on hotels and resorts, he still has not run short of customers.

He has advised farmers to always do a market survey before getting into farming.

Charan has stressed that hard work will always pay off.
