Gratitude for sacrifices by mothers in these testing times

The Minister for Women Mereseini Vuniwaqa is today conveying her gratitude towards the mothers who serve in essential services like health care, defence, markets, telecommunication, social services, supermarkets, and utility sectors as Fiji continues to battle COVID-19 and deals with the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Harold.

63% of health workers and 85% of market vendors in Fiji are women.

She says they value the sacrifices these mothers have made in these testing times and commend their resilience.

In her Mother’s Day message, Vuniwaqa says she hopes today people will recommit themselves to do more for women.

She says let’s give our mothers the respect they deserve, give all women the equality they deserve, the security they deserve, the love they deserve, and the acknowledgement they deserve.

Vuniwaqa says she wishes to thank mothers for all that they have done for their families, communities, and by extension for Fiji, especially in these unprecedented times of uncertainty and fear.

She has also commended the courage and strength of mothers who have become bearers of many other roles – being protectors, providers, teachers, healers, friends, and much more to ensure that their families remain positive and healthy. Vuniwaqa is also thanking women in our lives who love us in that same special way mothers do; grandmas, godmothers, friends, colleagues, aunts, sisters, and mentors.

She says the hearts of these women is full of compassion, love and care has sustained us through difficult times.

Vuniwaqa is hopeful everyone will work together to build a better and safer society for our mothers and women.
