The government is urging everyone including local authorities, civil society organisations, NGOs, religious leaders and village elders to work together to raise awareness about the consequences of domestic violence and promote a culture of zero tolerance.

While extending condolence to the family of the recent case of domestic violence where a woman was allegedly assaulted by her partner and eventually died, Minister for Justice and Attorney General Siromi Turaga says this loss is not just a private tragedy but a reflection of a broader societal problem that requires our immediate response.

He says it serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address the growing prevalence of domestic violence in our communities.

Turaga says in the last year alone, the incidence of domestic violence cases have almost doubled since 2021 and over 50 women have sadly lost their lives due to domestic violence over the past decade.

He says domestic violence is a grave violation of human rights, and it affects individuals, families, and our communities.

The Attorney General says given the profound and lasting impact of domestic violence, it necessitates a collective effort from all of society to prevent such tragic incidents from occurring.

Turaga says the government stands in solidarity with the victims of domestic violence and is committed to ensuring that domestic violence survivors are provided with the necessary support they require.

He says in their commitment to eradicating this problem, they will also progress efforts to strength the legislative frameworks and enforcement agencies so that perpetrators of domestic violence are held accountable for their actions.

Turaga says however, we all have a collective responsibility in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of members of our community.

The Attorney General is encourage individuals to speak out against domestic violence, support survivors and report any instances of abuse or violence.

He says as we approach the festive season, he is pleading for everyone to advocate, promote, practice and manifest love, tolerance, understand and respect other human being.

Turaga says as the Minister for Justice and responsible for law and order, it is his unreserved commitment to work towards a safer, more just and compassionate Fiji.
