Attorney General and Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says the Government is currently working on a civil service guideline to bring about a change in the way Fijians are served.

Sayed-Khaiyum says this is to make it more customer service oriented.

He highlighted this while speaking at the Municipal Council Special Administrators Induction where Sayed-Khaiyum also stated that all Special Administrators and CEOs need to be aligned to the policy objectives of the government.

Sayed-Khaiyum says it is critically important to change the culture within the staff of the municipal councils and they expect the Administrators through their CEOs will drive that change.

He is urging all municipal councils to put more focus on improving their service delivery.

The Attorney General is also urging Special Administrators to adopt a more hands-on approach to know exactly how many project approvals are being sought as it has been noted that some of the larger municipalities were lagging behind in the approval process.

He says this indecisiveness can cost people their jobs and impact the livelihoods of Fijians as well as the overall economy of the nation.

Sayed-Khaiyum further says the municipal councils should revisit the bylaws and inform their line Ministry on how it can be modernised to suit the 21st century.

The Minister for Economy also highlighted the Fijian economy is expected to grow by 11.4 percent this year and they need to be sharper in the way they do business and they all need to work together to achieve this economic growth.

He adds Fiji is expecting 447,000 tourists this year and it’s important they know that the tourists are coming to a country that is not only COVID-safe with one of the highest rates of vaccination in the developing world but they must also know that in addition to the service being delivered, the place is clean, and is actually a preferred destination.
