Government to accelerate access to boost digital connectivity in Fiji

Deputy PM Kamikamica and PS Shaheen Ali take a group shot with participants of the Multi-Stakeholder Roundtable discussion.

The government with the other stakeholders and partners will accelerate access to boost digital connectivity in Fiji through a subsea cable.

While officiating at the Multi-Stakeholder Roundtable discussion, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Communications, Manoa Kamikamica says this will be done under the Central Pacific Connect and South Pacific Initiatives as more needs to be done in bridging the global digital divide.

Kamikamica says there is also an interlinking cable between Fiji and French Polynesia which will increase Fiji’s resiliency and provide diversity.

He says the government will not stop until all our people have access to meaningful connectivity and access to streamlined, fast, reliable, secure and value-adding digital services because, internet access is just as crucial as access to roads, bridges, airports and ports which is part of the infrastructure we exist in. The Deputy Prime Minister says this will not only enhance our connectivity but will also accelerate equitable and resilient socio-economic growth, innovation and achievements.

He says we also need to ensure that internet connectivity and the cost of devices are affordable.

Kamikamica further says Rotuma has been identified as the pilot island which will deploy to other unconnected and underserved areas after the programme is rolled out.
