Gavoka calls on Govt to allow municipal councils to have their own elections

SODELPA Leader Viliame Gavoka

SODELPA Leader Viliame Gavoka says municipal councils should be allowed to have their own elections and also questioned why we have a large turnover of Chief Executive Officers in towns and cities.

While speaking in parliament during the review on the Audit Report of Municipal Councils for 2013, Gavoka says these CEOs do not last and they have been saying it for so long that the municipalities should have their own elections.

Gavoka says we should let the citizenry run their own affairs and should let them have a say on how to run their towns and cities.

He says they were told in 2006 that the overthrow of the SDL Government was to deal with the inefficiencies and to bring in better governance but we are in 2021 and the improvement is short of what was expected.

The SODELPA Leader adds he was in Ba a few weeks ago and the situation there is not what it used to be.

He says it is sad to see that the people are still going to the old Ba Mission Hospital while the new hospital is standing idle.

Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum then raised a point of order for Gavoka to talk about municipal councils and not hospitals.
