Chairman of the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC), Ratu Viliame Seruvakula

The growing number of rape cases in Fiji is raising alarm and the Chairman of the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC), Ratu Viliame Seruvakula is calling for a collective effort to restore the moral values that are foundational to the nation.

In an interview with fijivillage News, Ratu Viliame emphasises the growing crisis and how the loss of core values is at the heart of the rise in gender-based violence.

He says when we neglect to teach our children about core values, and we don’t have regular sit-downs or family gatherings, the kids roam around and listen to others.

Ratu Viliame says the lack of connection within families is a key factor contributing to these issues.

He adds that this is also a holistic issue, where church leaders and religious groups should join hands and play a part in addressing the problem.

As part of his ongoing outreach, Ratu Viliame will be discussing these issues in upcoming visits to the Rewa and Tailevu provinces this week, aiming to bring communities together to confront and resolve the growing crisis of gender-based violence.
