A former resident of the now shut down Natabua Golden Age Home has raised serious concerns repeatedly about alleged lack of food, inhumane treatment, sexual, physical and racial harassment and theft since last year however, he claims his issues have not been addressed by the Department of Social Welfare, the Fiji Police Force and the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission.

The resident says 8 residents passed away last year, and this needs to be investigated.

He has also filed harassment complaints and a police report was also filed.

The resident alleges $900 was stolen from his drawer in 2020 and no action was taken.

He also claims their beds were infested with bed bugs and they did not have toothbrushes, toothpaste and soap.

He claims they were not allowed to meet their families or donors.

The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission had earlier said they were investigating the allegations raised by the resident.

The Commission said they had visited the home in November and interviewed a number of residents in relation to the allegations and a preliminary report was compiled and submitted to Department of Social Welfare.

Their investigations continue.

Meanwhile, police say they had attended to the report whereby the complainant had stated that they they were not happy with the meals being served.

They say the matters were also handled by officials from the Department of Social Welfare.

Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Lynda Tabuya says they are looking into the matter now.

She says she was not informed about the allegation that were raised last year and she will look into it now.

The Natabua Golden Age Home was closed for renovations late last year and the residents have been relocated to other aged-care shelters around the country however they want the issues raised to be addressed.
