Fijians who have lost their jobs due to COVID-19, students of Year 11 and 12 and those already in the workforce can apply for short and cheaper courses to up-skill and re-skill themselves through a grant allocation given to FNU.

FNU’s Acting Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor TVET, Doctor Rohit Kishore says 5000 spaces has been announced in the 2021-2022 National Budget for Technical and Vocational Education and Training at the FNU under the Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service.

He says another $1 million dollars was announced for FNU for TVET to re-skill individuals who have lost their jobs due to COVID-19.

He says TVET offers short term certificate and diploma programs which is easier and cheaper to do which educates students directly for a piece of skill area which enhances their chance of employability.

He adds if we look at the economy, labour market is the largest area where we need a lot of people.

Kishore says there are about 100 programs and the courses are not more than 2 years compared to other higher education which takes longer time and TVET students can pursue higher education later.

He says the first round of 25 courses are ready and will start from 17th January next year and they will continue to have 25 rounds before the end of the budget year.
