Fijians who have lost their jobs due to COVID-19 can apply for Technical and Vocational Education and Training programmes through scholarships at the Fiji National University.

This is through a $1 million grant by the Fijian Government to enable FNU to re-skill individuals who have lost their jobs since the start of the pandemic.

FNU’s Acting Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor TVET, Doctor Rohit Kishore says the grant is allocated to FNU and students will not have to pay back.

He says individuals who would like to join FNU’s re-skilling programme funded by the Government do not require to present their marks, however they will need to provide evidence that they are unemployed.

He adds the Government has also announced 5000 spaces in the 2021-2022 National Budget for TVET at FNU under the Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service.

Dr Kishore says students eligible for TSLS-funded studies must have completed Year 12 with a minimum mark of 200/400 or completed Level 1 and II studies from the Technical College of Fiji.

He says Year 11 students can also apply for the Certificate III programmes however, in order to get a place in the 5000 placement, students need to attain a pass in Year 12.

He adds TVET offers short term certificate and diploma programs which is easier and cheaper to do that educates students directly for a piece of skill area and enhances their chance of employability.

He says if we look at the economy, labour market is the largest area where we need a lot of people.

Kishore says the courses are not more than 2 years compared to other higher education which takes longer time.

Interested individuals can apply now. The first round of applications will close tomorrow.

Prospective students can choose from a wide range of TVET courses offered in various fields of study at the University’s National Training and Productivity Centre, College of Business, Hospitality and Tourism Studies and College of Engineering, Science and Technology.
