People can expect better access to vaccines as the Japanese government will give around $19 million to UNICEF and the World Health Organization to strengthen immunization in five Pacific Island countries including Fiji.

The aim of this program is to help eradicate diseases such as polio, measles, rubella, tetanus and hepatitis B.

While signing the agreement, Minister for Health Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete says the Ministry has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the lives of infants and children through the program and the adult population through COVID-19 vaccines.

Dr Waqainabete has thanked the government of Japan for continuously assisting Fiji in our efforts to save the lives of Fijians.

Ambassador Extraordinary of Japan, Kawakami Fumihiro says this project will improve the immunization coverage in the five countries and will assist in identifying vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks.

He adds this project is crucial for the introduction of COVID-19 vaccines.
