A British Army soldier who climbed a wall to record his female colleague having sex before showing the clips to other servicemen has been dismissed from the service.

After hearing the woman moaning, Guardsman Meli Gaunavinaka Cama drunkenly scaled the outside of an accommodation block three times in one evening to take 11 minutes worth of footage of the couple.

A court martial was heard immediately afterwards, the 35-year-old - who was deployed on a training exercise at the time - showed the clips to a group of soldiers.

Gdsm Cama later presented the clips to the female colleague he recorded, who was 'distraught' at what she saw and 'ran away' from him.

In an attempt to defend the 'unconscionable' act, Gdsm Cama argued he heard 'moaning' and so was concerned with the woman's safety so wanted to check she was 'freely consenting to sex'.

But this assertion was rejected at a court martial hearing by a board who found the soldier guilty of voyeurism.

Catterick Military Court, North Yorkshire, heard Gdsm Cama committed the offence in November 2023 while on a training exercise in Oman.

The judge said Gdsm Cama did it because he wanted to 'record that sexual activity' both for his 'own personal gratification' and the 'gratification of others'.

The female victim described the 'profound and lasting impact' Gdsm Cama's behaviour had on her.

It was heard she is now a 'shadow of her former self' and has endured feelings of feelings of guilt, embarrassment and sleep disturbance.

Gdsm Cama was convicted of a single offence of voyeurism at a trial.

The court martial heard Gdsm Cama was absent from the sentencing hearing and was believed to be in Fiji.

The judge remarked that this was despite directions he made after his conviction that he was to surrender his passport and report daily to the orderly officer or other officer.

Sentencing him, the judge said: 'What he did on that occasion was unconscionable by taking advantage of someone, or two people, both of whom have every right to privacy; every right to do what they wished to do as consenting adults in the privacy of a room within the accommodation block.

The judge says the initial recording may not itself have been premeditated but more opportunistic, however this offending involved three separate and deliberate incidents of Guardsman Cama climbing up outside the block in order to deliberately record what was happening inside.

They say the opportunism fell away within seconds of that first climb.'

Judge Legard said the behaviour was 'inexcusable' and represents a 'betrayal of the values and standards of the Armed Forces'.

He handed him a 12-months civilian prison sentence and dismissed him from the service.
